Culture and association activities

Denmark offers rich cultural activities

Read more and self-services

Going to the library is a popular cultural activity in Denmark, and the local library is a good entry to cultural events in Denmark. You can obtain a library card and use library facilities free of charge. The libraries lend out books in Danish and in other languages, magazines, audio books, CDs and films on DVD. You can also log on to the Internet via the library’s PCs free of charge, read newspapers and borrow books from other libraries.

Helping schoolchildren with their homework is another service offered by many libraries.

In most municipalities, the public libraries provide access to downloading music, film streaming, downloading e-books, downloading audio books and access to databases, either from home or from the library’s PCs.

The libraries’ many activities also include cultural events such as author’s nights, art exhibitions, concerts, lectures, book readings, children’s films and theatre performances.

There are a vast number of clubs and associations in Denmark that cater to different interests: from sports clubs and political or religious societies to hunting clubs and hobby societies.

Everyone living in Denmark can join a club or an association. About 2/3 of Danes belong to one or more clubs or associations. As an active member of a club or association, you are able to meet new people, form friendships and expand your network.

One of the most common ways of doing so is by joining a sports club. 2/3 of all voluntary associations are sports clubs. Both outdoor and indoor sporting activities offer excellent opportunities for making friends and establishing networks – in addition to getting fit.

Your local library and the municipal cultural and leisure administration can provide you with a list of clubs and societies in your local area.

In Denmark, there are a great number of voluntary clubs, associations and events for expats living in Denmark. Expat families can meet there to network with others in the same situation and to get introduced to Danish working life and Danish culture through professional and social events. Some initiatives are run by municipalities or companies with foreign employees, others by cultural associations on the basis of the expat environments themselves.

International Community Aarhus

International Community in Aarhus is an association with the goal to support international employees and their families during their stay in the Aarhus region. Their venture to create social and professional networks to the benefit of expats encompasses a wide range of events, seminars and online activities.

International House North Denmark, Aalborg

The International House in Aalborg is your entry to the region of North Denmark for international citizens. They have events, programmes such as Culture Companions, a programme that aims at building bridges between the international citizens and the local community, and Spouse Space, an initiative oriented towards spouses at partners.

International House Copenhagen

If you are looking to expand your network, International House Copenhagen holds several events each year where you can network and meet other people living in the city.

International House Odense

International House Odense offers guidance to international employees and their families when moving to Odense; helping them settle, and introducing them to social networks and activities around the city. They organise different events for internationals and their accompanying families throughout the year.
