To register in the driving licence app, you need to have the following 4 things ready:

  • MitID
  • a valid Danish driving licence
  • a valid passport or ID card
  • a smartphone.

You can download the driving licence app from App Store or Google Play, after which you can start the registration process in the app. During the process, you will need to scan your passport or ID card with your mobile phone. Follow the instructions in the app.

The first time you register in the app, your driving licence data must be retrieved from the National Driving Licence Register. This can take up to 12 hours. After that, your driving licence app will be ready to use.

You can find the driving licence app in App Store and Google Play:

Technical requirements for your iPhone or Android phone

The driving licence app has certain technical requirements for your mobile phone. Before downloading the app, it is important that you ensure that your mobile phone meets the following requirements:

  • iPhone: iOS version 15 or later, equivalent to iPhone 7 or later
  • Android: Android 10 or later with NFC functionality for scanning passports or ID cards.

The driving licence app is easy to use, but there are some important things you need to be aware of. Below you will find information on how to use the app.

You can show your driving licence app to the police in Denmark

The driving licence app is a supplement to your plastic driving licence and can be used as a valid driving licence in Denmark. You can therefore use it to prove your right to drive to the police when driving in Denmark. When travelling abroad, you must still remember to bring your plastic driving licence.

If the police ask you to show your driving licence, use the driving licence app to show them a QR code, which they will scan to check your driving licence app.

It is your responsibility to be able to show your driving licence in the app to the police. If your mobile phone runs out of power or has a broken screen, you may be fined for not carrying your driving licence while driving.

You can use the driving licence app as proof of ID

You can show your digital driving licence on your mobile phone in places where you would normally use your plastic driving licence.

If you use the driving licence app as proof of identity (ID), for instance to buy alcohol or collect a parcel, the employee may ask to scan the QR code for proof of ID in your driving licence app. This allows you to prove that your app is genuine and that you are the holder of the ID.

The driving licence app as ID in Citizen Service (in Danish: borgerservice): Check the municipal website

If Citizen Service (borgerservice) in the municipality has the necessary technical equipment to scan your driving licence app, you can use it as ID for purposes such as issuing a passport or MitID.

Please check the municipal website to make sure they have the equipment. It may be a good idea to bring your plastic driving licence or other photo ID with you.

When you get a new mobile phone, you must re-register in the driving licence app. This also applies if you set up your new phone using a backup version of your old phone.

The driving licence app can only be used on one mobile phone at a time. Once you have registered your driving licence on a new phone, the driving licence app will automatically be reset on your old phone.

Changes to your driving licence are not automatically updated in the app – please register again

If you obtain a new driving licence or renew your driving licence, you need to re-register in the driving licence app. Your driving licence app will not automatically be updated with your latest driving licence. Shortly after you have received your new plastic driving licence, you can register again in the driving licence app.

When you register in the driving licence app, you must use your passport or ID card so that your photo can be added to the app. Your passport or ID card contains a chip with your photo on it, and when you scan your passport with the app, the photo is downloaded to your driving licence app.

The photo from your plastic driving licence is not stored anywhere after your plastic driving licence was printed. The photo from your passport or ID card can be used in the app instead because it meets the same requirements that apply to your driving licence photo.

What do you need help with?

Start Manage your driving licence app

You can reset your driving licence app if, for various reasons, you no longer want it to be active on your phone. When you reset the app, you remove yourself as a user. This is particularly important in certain situations.

You can reset your driving licence app if, for instance:

  • you lose your mobile phone
  • you lend your mobile phone to someone else
  • you no longer wish to be registered in the driving licence app.

You can reset the app by using the self-service ‘Manage your driving licence app’. You log in with MitID.

You can also reset the app directly in the driving licence app menu.

Start Manage your driving licence app

When you use the driving licence app, various personal data about you is processed:

  • Your driving licence data, which is retrieved from the Danish Driving Licence Register
  • Your name, civil registration number (CPR number) etc., which is retrieved from your MitID
  • Your photo, which is retrieved from your passport or ID card.

You can read about how the driving licence app handles your personal data and what rights you have on the website of the Danish Agency for Digital Government:

You can also download an extract of all the personal data the Danish Agency for Digital Government store about you in the app by using the self-service ‘Manage your driving licence app’. You log in with MitID.

The driving licence app does not have access to information about where you use the app or how you use it.

The Agency for Digital Government has access to app information from App Store and Google Play about the number of people who have downloaded, installed and uninstalled the app, and what types of devices are used.

Your driving licence must be valid in the Danish Road Traffic Authority’s Driving Licence Register in order for you to use the driving licence app. In some cases, your driving licence may be displayed as invalid in the Danish Road Traffic Authority’s Driving Licence Register. This means that the driving licence will also be invalid in your driving licence app or cannot be registered in the app.

If you experience problems retrieving your driving licence data in the app, or if the driving licence is displayed as invalid in the app, there may be several reasons for this:

  • Your driving licence has expired
  • Your driving licence has been reported lost
  • Your driving licence is temporary
  • Your driving licence has been revoked or is no longer available for other reasons.
