AltID is Denmark’s official app for digital IDs and credentials. To begin with, you can add 2 credentials to the app:

  • A Photo ID card: You can use this card, for example, when collecting parcels.
  • Proof of Age: You can use this, for example, if you’re going to a nightclub or bar, or if you want to buy alcohol and tobacco.

AltID does not replace MitID. More credentials will be available in the future.

At the moment, AltID can only be used in Denmark, but in the future, it will be available throughout the EU.

AltID protects your privacy

AltID is designed to protect your privacy and personal details to the highest degree. A key feature of AltID is that your credentials and data are stored locally on your phone, and no one but you can access your information. Your credentials are private.

You decide:

  • whether you want to use the app.
  • who you want to share the information from your credentials with.
  • how much you want to share. For example, you can choose to share only your name and not your civil registration number (CPR number) when using the Photo ID card. If you share information via a request in AltID, it is up to you to decide whether to share the information you are asked to provide.

To register with AltID, you need 4 things:

  • MitID (or a non-Danish eID that is connected to your Danish CPR number)
  • Civil registration number (CPR number)
  • A smartphone that meets the technical requirements
  • If applicable, a valid passport with a chip

You need your passport in order for your photo to be added to AltID. Your passport contains a chip that stores your photo, and when you scan your passport using the app, the photo is imported into AltID.

Technical requirements for your iPhone or Android phone

AltID has certain technical requirements for your phone. Before downloading the app, it is important to ensure that your phone meets the following requirements:

  • iPhone: iOS version 15 or later, equivalent to iPhone 7 or later.
  • Android: Android 10 or later with NFC functionality for scanning passports.

Follow these 3 steps to download and set up AltID on your smartphone or tablet.

  • Download the app. You can download the app for free from App Store or Google Play.
  • Log in with your MitID or a non-Danish eID that is connected to your Danish CPR number. When you do this, the app will be linked to you. During the process, you will also have the option to scan your passport with your phone. Follow the instructions in the app.
  • Add your first credential: Photo ID card or Proof of Identity. You will need to log in with MitID or non-Danish eID again.

When you add your first credential

In the app, you need to add a digital ID or credential so that the app can be linked to you. This can be either with a photo (Photo ID card) or without a photo (Proof of Identity). When you add your first credential, the Danish Agency for Digital Government retrieves information about you from the Civil Registration System (CPR).

Technical requirements for your phone

AltID has certain technical requirements for your phone. Before downloading the app, it is important to ensure that your phone meets the following requirements:

  • iPhone: iOS version 15 or later, equivalent to iPhone 7 or later.
  • Android: Android 10 or later with NFC functionality for scanning passports.

In AltID, you can add 2 credentials:

  • Photo ID card: The card can be used as photo ID.
  • Proof of Age: The credential can be used to confirm that you meet a specific age requirement.

The Photo ID card

When you set up your Photo ID card, it will contain your name, date of birth, place of birth, nationality, address and civil registration number (CPR number). When you use your Photo ID card, you can choose exactly which information to share. This allows you to decide for yourself which information the recipient should receive.

You can use the Photo ID card, for example, if you:

  • collect a parcel and are required to show photo ID
  • share information about yourself, such as your address or CPR number
  • need to prove your identity in other situations.

Without a photo, the card serves as Proof of Identity

If you do not add a photo to the Photo ID card, it becomes a Proof of Identity. The Proof of Identity contains the same information as the Photo ID card, but without a photo it cannot be used as photo ID.

Proof of Age

The Proof of Age allows you to confirm that you meet a specific age limit. This could be, for example, 15+, 16+, 18+, or 67+. The Proof of Age does not contain any information that can be used to identify you.

You can use the Proof of Age, for example, if you:

  • buy alcohol or tobacco at a convenience store or supermarket
  • need to enter age-restricted venues, such as nightclubs and bars.

If you have added your passport photo to AltID, your photo will also appear on your Proof of Age. Whether you use the Proof of Age or the Photo ID card, your photo will never be transferred to a recipient.

How to use AltID

What AltID can be used for depends on the credentials you add to your app. To begin with, you can add a Proof of Age and a Photo ID card. AltID does not replace MitID. More credentials will be available in the future.

Photo ID card

The Photo ID card contains information that can identify you. It can be used in the same way as other types of photo ID, such as a driving licence or a passport.

You can use the Photo ID card, for example, if you:

  • collect a parcel and are required to show photo ID
  • share information about yourself, such as your address or CPR-number

Using the app abroad?

At the moment, AltID can only be used in Denmark, but in the future, it will be available throughout the EU.

You decide for yourself whether you want to share the information you have in AltID. You can always see what information you share before you share it. If you share your information via a request where you swipe, you can also see what you share and with whom. Exactly what information you can share depends on the credentials you have added to AltID.

You can share documents in 3 ways:

  • Show the QR code to a scanner.
  • Receive a request and swipe to share – just as you do with MitID.
  • Show the evidence to an employee.

Which of the 3 ways you should use to share the credentials depends on where you are using it.

You can show your credentials in the app even if your mobile phone isn’t connected to the internet. The QR code and your information will still be displayed. This means you can also use AltID in places where the connection is weak.

About AltID

AltID is designed so that you are in control of your data. The digital IDs or credentials are stored locally in the app on your phone.

The credentials are therefore yours alone, and you can use them without the issuer of the credential being able to see that you are using them. It is you, the user, who has control over your data and where it is shared.

This means that with the Proof of Age, you can confirm that you meet a specific age limit completely anonymously. If you use the Photo ID card, you cannot remain anonymous, as it only contains personally identifiable information.

The Danish Agency for Digital Government and other authorities will not be informed of where and when you use your credentials.

You can read more about how your information is processed:

You can only have AltID in one place – on one phone or one tablet. You can use AltID in a variety of situations – both at home and out and about. For this reason, it might be a good idea to download the app onto your mobile phone rather than having it on a tablet.

You can add your passport photo when you register in AltID, or you can add it at a later date.

It is not possible to add any photos other than your passport photo to AltID.

When you show a digital ID or credential, your photo will always be displayed alongside the credential you are using. Your photo is stored locally on your phone and is never transferred digitally to a recipient.

If you add your passport photo to AltID: If your passport photo is added, your Proof of Identity becomes a Photo ID card and can be used on an equal footing with other types of photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport.

If you get a new passport, you can update your passport photo in AltID.

If you do not add your photo to AltID: If your passport photo is not added to your AltID, or you remove your photo from AltID, your Photo ID card will be changed to a Proof of Identity and cannot be used as photo ID. You can add your passport photo again at any time.

For the time being, it is possible to add 2 digital IDs or credentials to AltID: the Photo ID card and the Proof of Age.

If you have an ID card from another country than Denmark, it is not possible to add it to AltID.

It is up to the individual organisations, businesses or public authorities to decide whether they wish to accept digital IDs or credentials from AltID.

Organisations must be registered in the AltID Relying Party Registry if they wish to request information from the Photo ID card or Proof of Identity. This helps to ensure that organisations only request the information they are entitled to.

However, organisations, businesses and public authorities may request information from the Proof of Age without being registered in the AltID Relying Party Registry.

It is always up to you to decide whether you wish to share the information you are asked to provide.

The Danish Agency for Digital Government has developed AltID because Denmark and the other EU countries have decided that you should be able to prove your age or identity digitally in a quick and secure manner, even across borders.

AltID does not replace MitID.

At the moment, AltID can only be used in Denmark, but in the future, it will be available throughout the EU. With the app, it is easy to prove who you are, and you can choose exactly what information you share when, for example, you need to collect a parcel or prove your age.

If you need help

You need your passport in order for your photo to be added to AltID. Your passport contains a chip that stores your photo, and when you scan your passport using the app, the photo is imported into AltID.

If you’re having trouble scanning your passport, start by checking whether your passport and phone meet the technical requirements:

  • Is your passport valid and has a chip?
  • Does your phone have NFC functionality for scanning passports?

Technical requirements for your iPhone or Android phone

  • iPhone: iOS version 15 or later, equivalent to iPhone 7 or later.
  • Android: Android 10 or later with NFC functionality for scanning passports.

If you are still having trouble scanning your passport, please contact the AltID support.

If you get a new phone, you will need to set up AltID and your digital IDs or credentials using MitID (or a non-Danish eID that is connected to a Danish CPR number) again. The credentials are stored locally on your phone, which is why they are not transferred if you set up AltID on a different phone.

When you set up AltID on your new phone, AltID will automatically be reset on your old phone. This also means that you will delete all the credentials you have in AltID on your old phone.

You can also choose to reset AltID on your old phone before setting it up on the new one. You reset the app by selecting ‘Reset app’ in the app menu.

If your phone is stolen or it breaks, you must call AltID support to have AltID reset.

You can also choose to set up AltID on a tablet or another phone, if you have the option to do so. This will automatically reset AltID on the phone you have lost, or which has broken.

You can always choose to delete digital IDs or credentials in AltID. If you have deleted a credential, you can usually add it again.

Please note that you can only delete your Photo ID card or Proof of Identity by resetting AltID. This is because AltID can only be used if there is a valid Photo ID card or Proof of Identity.
