Repayment of student loan and overpaid student grants are administered by Udbetaling Danmark

You can repay your loan or any overpaid student grants by logging in using MitID:

Here, you can either pay using:

  • A payment card (free of charge)
  • Foreign giro inpayment forms (charge varies)    
  • SWIFT, i.e. you can arrange for your foreign bank to transfer your payment via the banks’ international payment system (SWIFT).

Postpone repayments

If you are unable to repay your student loan, you can apply to postpone your repayments for up to two years at a time. However, your debt must still be repaid within the same period. This means that you still have to pay the same amount even if your repayments are postponed. Only, you will be repaying the amount over a shorter period of time.

You can only postpone your repayments if the resulting monthly repayments after the period of postponement do not exceed DKK 3,000.

Reduce your monthly repayments

If you are only able to repay some of the amount due each month, you can contact Udbetaling Danmark, and ask for your monthly repayments to be reduced. However, you still have to repay your debt within the same period. This means that you must still repay the same amount even though your monthly repayments are reduced. Only, you will be repaying the amount over a shorter period of time.

You can only reduce your monthly repayments if the resulting monthly repayments after the period of reduced repayments do not exceed DKK 3,000.

You can reduce your monthly repayments for a maximum period of 12 months at a time.

If you have to repay overpaid student grants, you can ask to postpone your repayments or to reduce the size of your repayments. You can ask to postpone or reduce your repayments for one year at a time.

If you want to reduce the size of your repayments, you must contact Udbetaling Danmark – Public Benefits Administration, Student Loans department:

If you fail to repay your student debt as agreed, you will receive two reminders from Udbetaling Danmark. If you still do not pay, your debt repayment agreement will be terminated.

If your debt repayment agreement with Udbetaling Danmark is terminated, the matter will be placed in the hands of the Danish tax authorities, Gældsstyrelsen. Both your repayments and the interest charged by Gældsstyrelsen will be higher.

In addition, Gældsstyrelsen has the right to deduct an amount from your income to repay your debt. This also means that any tax you may have overpaid will not be refunded. The money will instead go towards repaying your debt.

If you want another person to help you, you must complete a power of attorney:

What to do

  • Complete and print the power of attorney
  • Sign the power of attorney
  • Scan the document on your computer
  • Send it to Udbetaling Danmark, Student debt.

If you have MitID, you can send the power of attorney via Digital Post.

If you do not have MitID, you can send the power of attorney regular mail to:

If you disagree on the amount of overpaid student grant to be repaid, you must contact the Danish Agency for Institutions and Educational Grants.

The Danish Agency for Institutions and Educational Grants must receive your complaint within four weeks of you having been notified of the amount to be repaid.

If the Danish Agency for Institutions and Educational Grants upholds its decision, your complaint will be forwarded to the Danish Educational Support Appeal Board, which makes the final decision.

If you want to complain about the amount you have to repay, your repayment period, fees etc., you must submit a complaint to Udbetaling Danmark via Digital Post:

Udbetaling Danmark must receive your complaint within four weeks of you having received the decision.

If Udbetaling Danmark upholds its decision, your complaint will be forwarded to the Danish Educational Support Appeal Board, which makes the final decision.
