When a person dies in Denmark and is to be transported to another country, it is required that the deceased is accompanied by a special permit called a ‘laissez-passer for a corpse’. The permit is issued by the Danish Patient Safety Authority.

The laissez-passer for a corpse is not required when:

  • Transporting ashes to or from abroad
  • Transporting a corpse to the Faroe Islands
  • Transporting a corpse to and from Bornholm via Sweden

A number of documents need to be provided in order for a laissez-passer for a corpse to be issued. If a funeral director is in charge of the practicalities following the death, the funeral director will typically help with obtaining these documents. In all other cases, the relatives of the deceased need to obtain the necessary documents.

To obtain a permit to transport at corpse (laissez-passer for a corpse), the following 4 (possibly 5) documents must be submitted to the Danish Patient Safety Authority as part of the application process:

1. Death certificate

A doctor issues the death certificate. The doctor must hand over a copy of page 1 of the death certificate to the relatives and a copy of page 2 of the death certificate in a sealed envelope, which must be delivered to the Danish Patient Safety Authority.

2. Confirmation of notification of death to the burial authority

The relatives of the deceased must complete a request to the burial authority for burial or cremation. The burial authority is the parish where the deceased passed away or the place of residence of the deceased. If burial or cremation cannot be carried out within 8 days, a request for a suspension needs to be made.

3. Request for transport of a corpse abroad

When transporting a corpse abroad, special requirements apply for the design of the coffin, which must be tight and solid.

4. Soldering certificate for zinc coffins

The soldering of zinc coffins is usually carried out by the funeral director. The company or person who has carried out the soldering must complete and sign the soldering certificate.

5. Embalming certificate (only required if the deceased is to be transported by air)

Embalming is normally carried out by the funeral director. The person who has embalmed the corpse will fill out and sign the embalming certificate. The company transporting the corpse may have additional requirements.
